Feminism is the ideology of social, political, and economic equality between women and men. It typically seeks to achieve this equality by challenging or seeking to overturn gender roles. The word "feminism" can be used as an umbrella term for several different movements and goals. The feminist movement has divided into three main branches: liberal feminism, radical feminism, and socialist feminism.

These branches often overlap, with each side carrying its own beliefs regarding gender norms in society. Feminism found its roots in the late 18th century and early 19th century United States, where it was closely related to the women's rights movement. American feminists worked to secure voting rights for women through various political movements.

Their success in obtaining voting rights in a number of states ultimately led to U.S. women gaining suffrage (the right to vote).

In reaction, other countries began efforts of their own, including: England's 1893 Women's Social and Political Union, Germany's Bund Deutscher Frauen (League of German Women) founded in 1905, France’s Solid arité Féminine founded in 1899, and Italy’s Unione Donne Italiana (Union of Italian Women).

In 1919, the International Woman Suffrage Alliance was established as a global organization for women's suffrage. Its members were: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Denmark-Norway-Sweden-Finland (renamed Finland in 1918), France-Luxembourg-Netherlands (renamed Netherlands in 1918), Germany (renamed Germany after World War I), Hungary (twice by revolution and again by treaty) Ireland-Italy-, etc.
